Meghan Trainor All About That Bass ALBUM 1-13 LA REIDMeghan Trainor: ‘All About That Bass’ Was Written For Someone Else

Meghan Trainor got signed to a songwriting deal right out of high school and went on to cowrite two tracks for Rascal Flatts. Now she’s 20 and has a hit of her own. Meghan Trainor, the 20-year-old who is having a pop culture moment with the song about body acceptance, said she initially wrote the track and pitched it to several labels, who loved the catchy little tune but had no idea what to do with it.

Trainor never had any intention of singing the song herself, and they were looking for someone else to record it. “Labels were like, `We love it, but you have to reproduce it. You got to get it more synth-y, pop-y,'” said Trainor, who worked with producer Kevin Kadish on “Bass.” “We looked at each other like, `Man, I thought this was a hit, but I guess not.'”

Their break came when L.A. Reid, head of Epic, heard the shoo-wop pop song, “Who’s singing it? Go find that voice.” “I met his A&R guy Paul Pontius and I sang for him.  A week later, I was in L.A. and I texted him, “Wanna get some coffee?” I was just making up stuff to get his attention. He was like, “Wanna play for L.A. Reid tomorrow?” All I had was my ukelele; I was so nervous, but L.A. was doing the shoo-wop-wops and dancing with me.  L.A. Reid signed the budding songwriter to Epic Records and told Trainor she should be the voice behind her song.

This week, the song jumped several spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart to No. 1. The single has sold 389,719 copies so far in five weeks, and the music video, which has 196 million views and climbing, has become a major topic among young girls and parents.

Whether is it because people relate to the positive body image message, or because it is just such a catchy little tune, the song became an almost overnight hit — beating out new releases by established artists such as Nicki Minaj and Jennifer Lopez.
